What I Teach
ReadingFor Reading, the fifth and sixth graders read from a selection of short stories in their reading textbooks. Pathways To Adventure is the fifth grade textbook. Times of Discovery is the sixth grade textbook. They also read novels. The fifth graders will read & discuss The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. The sixth graders will read & discuss the novels The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis and Pandora Gets Jealous by Carolyn Hennesy.

Language ArtsLanguage Arts consists of grammar, spelling, and creative writing. Grammar consists of learning the parts of speech, parts of sentences, types of sentences, capitalization, and punctuation. Spelling consists of learning words each week the coordinate with the short stories or novels. A spelling contract is given for homework each week. In creative writing, the students learn how to write using various styles of writing following the steps in the writing process.

ScienceIn Science, the fifth graders focus on topics from the three main categories of science- Life, Earth, & Physical. In life science, the students will be studying the processes in living things and interactions among living things. In Earth science, students will study processes that change Earth and cycles on Earth and it space. In physical science, students will study matter, energy, forces, and motion. Fifth graders will apply the scientific method through investigation activities. They will also complete a science fair project using the scientific method.
